This portfolio contains works that are completely from location studies in oil paint. Nature is this unbelievably complicated mess of visual stuff. I have made It my job as the artist to decipher it. I don’t use any photography. To assign that job to a camera is to miss the point of landscape painting.
This portfolio contains a selection of works inspired by being in the landscape and making field drawings, pastels and oil sketches. I like the thought that there is the land and we construct the scape part, a view or picture of a scene.
Barns are an attraction for me. Their sizes, colors and positions in the landscape offer an opportunity to celebrate something monumental and humble at the same time. They are definitely a way to fill the space of a canvas in an interesting way.
